The brake rotor is an iron disc connected to the tire hub used in a disc brake assembly. Disc brakes are mainly used on the front wheels of vehicles, but are increasingly found on the rear wheels. The rotors work together with the brake pads to stop the vehicle.
When the brake pedal is pressed, the pads of the vehicle are pressed against the rotor, causing friction. This friction can cause the vehicle to stop during a significant release of heat. The rotors consist of two iron discs connected by ribs. When the brakes are applied, the brake pads are supported on the two iron discs. There are many models of rotor ribs, but they all do the same. They help dissipate large amounts of heat caused by friction between the rotor and the brake pads. These ribs allow hot air to escape from the rotor and also direct the air to cool the rotor. It is very important that the rotors can dissipate a lot of heat to work properly. There are also two types of powerful rotors: perforated rotors and grooves. Perforated rotors consist of holes made in specific patterns on the rotor surface. Although these holes offer less compression area for the brake pads, they allow heat, gas and water to pass quickly from the rotor surface. A groove rotor has directional grooves or ridges on the surface of the rotor. Again, these slots remove heat, gas and water from the rotor surface. Both projects are good for high quality vehicles, but they have their problems. Perforated rotors are not very resistant and may explode around holes; Broken rotors can cause excessive wear on the brake pads.
