Most of your vehicle's energy is converted to heat. Just remember that all the moving parts of your engine cause a lot of friction and give off a lot of thermal energy. The oil in your engine and your vehicle's exhaust system provide some of the heat, the cooling system the rest. Your cooling system is responsible, for lack of a better word, to cool your engine. The cooling system must ensure that the engine does not overheat or fail.
